In 1934, the governing body of international motorsport specified a maximum weight for Grand Prix racing cars of 750kg, excluding tires and fuel. The Germans decided to reduce the weight by removing the lead-based paint that designated the traditional white livery of its cars, exposing the distinctive bright aluminum. The victory of one of them earned it the nickname Silver Arrow. Their successors, built on the same chassis, continued to race successfully in the Indy 500 after the war.
